David Meza Geology 9 Nicaragua being a country that is neighbors with the ring of fire unfortunately is impacted with many types of hazards. Some of the main hazards in this country are floods and droughts due to climate change. There are many things that this country can do to help with these types of hazards that will keep people safe. Nicaragua has many places that are impacted the most with hazards that people should know to stay away from and the reasons for it. This country has its dangerous areas but it also has many places that are safe for people to move to and build a home and create a family. Nicaragua in the recent years has experienced many hazards some that impact the country the most is floods and droughts and this is due to climate change. Now since we can’t change climate change from one day to another we have to learn how to work around it. Nicaragua experienced recently with hurricane Nate a...

Nicaragua’s has many types of hazards that impact the country heavily. Most of the dangerous hazards happen near or on the coast which is neighbors with the ring of fire. In addition to the location of Nicaragua impacting all of these hazards climate change has increased many of those hazards becoming uncontrollable for the people to deal with. Most commonly the rainfall is what impacts Nicaragua’s coast. Recently Nicaragua’s coast was hit with a “category 2 storm on the five-point Saffir-Simpson scale when it hit in October 2016” called Hurricane Otto ( reliefweb.int ) all of the rain from this storm created many floods in various locations of the coast. All of this rainfall and flooding damaged many peoples homes and many had to evacuate and leave all of their belongings behind. On a positive note out of “10,143 people and the 69 coastal communities” (relief web.int ) no person was found dead no person went missing and there were no injuries. Nicaragu...

Week 10 Extreme Weather/ Country of our Choice. On this weeks post I decided to choose Bolivia as part of the Extreme Weather conditions. Many places around the world have extremely dangerous weather conditions but in some circumstances I think not on how big or long a natural disaster happened for but the impact that it did and the people that it affected. Bolivia has a little bit of everything when it comes to natural disasters. Bolivia ranges from droughts, floods, and landslides. Since most of the people are low income when a natural disaster happens they struggle to get back on their feet. some of the more intense weather conditions is in the wettest part of the country they can receive up to 40 - 150 inches of rain in the months of September through May depending on the location (Bolivian Life). Bolivia can receive that much rainfall because of the strong winds that blow from the Amazon. In addition to all the rainfall their temperatures range from about 60 -80 degrees in the...

Week 5 Volcanos This week we talk about volcanos. There are several volcanoes for example shield, cinder cones, and composite fragments. We also learn the different sizes of volcanoes and which are more common to burst and or more active than others (Keller p133). Also volcanic behavior is very important to keep monitor to keep people aware because volcanoes don’t only burst and blast but they release poisonous gasses into the water systems that can affect livestock and people. Volcanoes also have secondary effects like debris flows, mudflows, and volcanic landslides (Keller 149). Cerro Negro, Nicaragua San Cristobal, Nicaragua Nicaragua’s biggest volcano is San Cristobal which is one of seven active volcanoes. It last erupted in April, 22, 2016 and it erupted more than 10 times. San Cristobal is rated a small to moderate activity. The government has protocols depending on the volcano eruption they evacuate the locals nearest the volcano. T...

This week we are learning about earthquakes and what causes them. In specific here in California we have one of the greatest faults that is visible and not under ground like most of them. The San Andreas fault is know for reaching from the top of California near Oregon to reaching all the way down south in Mexico. It is part of two plates the North American plate and Pacific plate, it is also one of the few places where you can go and stand on both plates because it is visible through the surface. This fault is called strike slip because it slides past the other, and causes for frequent earthquakes here in California. Nicaragua on the other hand is also know for having many earthquakes as their plates are always moving. Nicaragua is High in earthquakes their plates are constantly moving. Recently Nicaragua coast had an earthquake on the 21 of January that was rated a 5.0. On the 31 of January inland their was an earthquake rated at 4.5 (think hazard). The coast of Nicaragu...

Week 2 is about the different types of boundaries and how close our country is to them. There are three different kinds of boundaries Divergent, Convergent and Transform (Keller 36). Divergent where plates move away from each other. Convergent plates occur when the plates move toward each other. Lastly Transform plates move past each other for example when one plates moves up and the other one moves down. Nicaragua has Convergent boundaries. The Pacific Plate is sub ducting under the Nicaragua sea plate. Nicaragua is prone to a lot of natural disasters like volcanic activity, hurricanes, severe storms and flooding due to its location around the Ring of Fire. The ring of fire is an active location where a lot of earthquakes and volcanoes occur because of the plates subduction.
